HYDERABAD: A 16-year-old girl studying intermediate first year at a corporate college in Miyapur set herself ablaze in the college hostel. The girl was homesick and was not interested in staying at the hostel, preliminary investigation by the police revealed.

Police also surmised that the girl draped herself with sheets of clothes, sat on a  heap of books and clothes and used some combustible material to set herself on fire.

Miyapur police inspector Kotwal Ramesh said the girl Nadikuda Satvika (16),  daughter of N Santosh Reddy of Macherla village in Armoor mandal, of Nizamabad district, was studying MPC first year in Sri Chaitanya Junior College, situated at Bollaram Road in Miyapur. Satvika had been home for Dasara vacations and had returned to the hostel  just two days ago.

Around 1 pm, she called her mother over the phone and reportedly expressed her disinterest in staying in the hostel, said police.

“After making the phone call, Satvika along with other girls went to the mess for lunch but she returned to her room after some time. She dumped all her books, clothes in the room and draped bedsheets around her and allegedly set herself ablaze,” said the inspector.

Satvika’s friends noticed the girl rushing back to the room from the mess but did not sense anything amiss. After sometime, when they returned, they found the girl caught in blazes. With the help of the hostel caretakers, they doused the flames but the girl was dead by then.  Soon, the police rushed to the spot on being informed. “We are probing as to how the girl obtained combustible material,’’ the inspector said, adding that they are even sure what the material is. The girl’s body has been sent to Gandhi Hospital for autopsy after booking a case of suspicious death, said the inspector,  adding that no case has been booked against the management yet. The NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham demanded the police file cases against the college.
