HMWS&SB urges Robotic device to enter manholes

HYDERABAD: Stressing on the importance of technology, HMWS&SB Managing Director, M Dana Kishore urged technical experts to design a robotic instrument instead of men entering into manholes for cleaning block sewerage lines. This robotic instrument should move from manhole to manhole for cleaning the sewerage system and removing silt and solid material in the pipelines and solid wastages, rock material dumped by the public. These are main hurdles in the manholes and sewer lines stopping the sewerage flow.

Despite mini air-tech machines being used to clean sewer lines, the length of pipelines and thousands of manhole clearance is not possible with these machines unless modern technology is being handled.
Dana Kishore asked the technical experts to design a special suite in a scientific manner for the manual labour working in manhole operations and sewer lines to enable them to get the life-saving oxygen and protection.

To eliminate manual scavenging and cleaning manholes and sewerage lines in Greater Hyderabad, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) held detailed discussion with technical experts who came  from New Delhi here on Saturday.
Dana Kishore held detailed discussions with the technical experts comprising Balakrishna, Retd General Manager from HAL, Bangalore, Ashok Khurana, Retd. Director General from CPWD, O.Germaiah, Deputy General Manager from HAL, Helicopter Division, Bangalore and Bezwada Wilson from National Safai Karmachari Andolan.

Censors for pipeline maintenance

The HMWS&SB has around 2.65 lakh manholes and all these manholes are being geo-tagged to enable to know the manhole position whether it is being used or not or the manhole is left opened. He asked the technical experts to design the censor kind of chips to make use in the HMWSSB Maintenance and Operations. The censors shall be designed to indicate water supply pipeline leakages or polluted water or if water is being contaminated with place and location and house numbers so as to enable staff for taking immediate action. This censor indication would alert officers sitting even at Head Office for taking immediate action. HMWSSB has around 9,000 km length of pipeline supplying qualitative water duly filtered at water treatment plants located at various points. But this water sometimes becomes polluted in distribution system due to various reasons and if the censors are being indicated by some signals, the immediate precautionary measures are possible to be handled by HMWS&SB.
