23-yr-old uses Truecaller app to harass 300 women in Hyderabad

A 23-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly sending objectionable messages, via Whatsapp to women.

HYDERABAD: A 23-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly sending objectionable messages, via Whatsapp to women. The accused, Uppuluri Mani Ratnam used mobile app – truecaller – to access the phone numbers of over 300 women. He went on to even create a WhatsApp group titled “Romantic Thoughts Sharing” in WhatsApp where he allegedly sent objectionable content to all.

The sleuths of cyber crime station of Hyderabad police nabbed him after receiving a complaint from a sub-inspector attached to the SHE team. SI M Shoban Babu stated that he received a threatening and abusive messages on WhatsApp after he started an inquiry based on a complaint from a city police’ Hawkeye app user.

“The sub inspector, who received information from a victim, called that number but did not get an answer. Later, the accused sent threatening messages to the SI via WhatsApp.

Based on mobile number, police have also verified the social networking accounts that were created by providing details of same mobile number,” DCP, CCS, Avinash Mohanty said. According to him, it was noticed that the accused sent friend requests to several girls, some of whom accepted and started making conversation with him.

“The accused took their personal details, phone numbers and photos. Based on the complaint, we have registered criminal cases under Information Technology Act and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC,” said the DCP.
