Etching the Dreams of the Master Artist

After capturing the life of Artist Namboothiri, the master   of strokes, Binuraj Kalapeedam, a documentary maker, is out to etch his  dreams too. In his fifth venture, Binuraj will take his camera to the  streets of Paris to give life to Artist Namboothiri’s unrealised dream - to live in the ‘City of Art.’

“We have travelled together a lot. On one such occasion, he shared his  unrealised dream of living in Paris. He always wanted to spend his life in Paris, the haven for international artists and writers. This prompted me to  make it the subject of my next documentary. I suggested him the idea and he agreed instantly,” says Binuraj Kalapeedam.

Binuraj has already planned the entire documentary. “The 30-minutes documentary will portray the artist living his dream and absorbing the aura of the city. The presentation is likely to start with the artist sitting on a chair reading a book. He dozes off to a dream in which he live, work and die in Paris, his dream place,” he said. Binuraj, an award-winning director, says  he is going to adopt a different style for his new venture.

“Compared to my other works, the documentary will be treated differently. The dream of the artist will be captured through the beautiful visuals of  Paris,” says the director who has also made a documentary on the eventful career of Namboothiri titled ‘Varayude Kulapathy’ in a narrative way.  Binuraj is currently working on a film documentary titled ‘Devaspandanam’ on veteran artist M V Devan.

“I studied at Kerala Kalapeedam which gave me  opportunity to meet several legendary artists, including M V Devan and Namboothiri. I have been associated with them for the last 15 years. This was the inspiration to make a documentary on Devan who had incomparable talent as a painter, sculptor and writer,” he said.

It was Binuraj’s life at the Art School at Chennai that shaped his life. His other ventures are on M K Sanoo titled ‘Sneha Pournami’, former Supreme Court Judge V R Krishna Iyer ‘Living Legend and the Marthoma Cathedral - Charithram Urguna Vazhikaliloode’ at Mulanthuruthy.

He also harbours ambitions about making a feature film. “A music-based feature film to be shot at Tanjavur,” says Binuraj.
