KOCHI: Just months before passing out of college with a degree in computer science, fourth year students of Jyothi Engineering College, Cherthurthy released a music video, Kanave Kalayathe. The students produced this video in association with Muzik247, a prominent Malayalam music label that has produced sound tracks to movies like Angamaly Diaries, Ezra and Premam amongst others.

“I was interested in acting, the others were interested in photography, music, directing and editing, so we all came together and pooled our skills for this project,” says Akash Thomas one of the actors in the music video. The Kanave Kalayathe music video stars the students of Jyothi College with the exception of two girls, Shweta and Neethu Krishna who are from other institutes. The shoot had a total budget of one lakh rupees, which was funded by Nidhinsha from Jazz Letters. Sachin Warrier of Thuddakam Mangalyam fame and other equally popular songs, has lent his voice to the Kanave Kalayathe album.
The music video garnered over 21,000 views in five days. The team, Theyyam, has received a favourable response from the music industry. “We also received a lot of promising feedback from our peers and we hope to foray into the mainstream film and music scene in the future,” says Akash Thomas.
However, this is not the teams first venture.  ‘Deva Suhurth’ which was released in February last year was the first short film they made. “We wanted to do something creative aside,” says Abee Joe, the music director and cinematographer of the music video.
