Traditional fishermen to stage agitation demanding Vypeen-Goshreepuram Fishing Harbour maintenance

The protest was triggered after a private harbour owner in Vypeen Kalamukku decided to oust the fishermen from the harbour.

KOCHI: The district committee meeting of the Kerala Traditional Fishermen Samithi has decided to lay siege to the Vallarpadam Container Terminal road on May 20, demanding the maintenance of the Vypeen-Goshreepuram Fishing Harbour Road.

The meeting held on Monday decided to bring together around 2,000 fishermen and labourers in the allied sectors for the strike. The protest was triggered after a private harbour owner in Vypeen Kalamukku decided to oust the fishermen from the harbour.

The meeting also called for extending the trawling ban period to 90 days in the wake of depleting fish wealth. It demanded scrapping of security fee for traditional fishing boats, financial package for fishermen and laws to protect fish wealth.

The meeting decided to submit memorandums to the Fisheries Minister and MLAs highlighting the issues in the fishing sector.
