Kovalam: A hot spot for scuba diving

Kerala makes space for scuba diving amid other adventure sports
Kovalam: A hot spot for scuba diving

KOCHI: God’s Own Country boasts of a string of tourist attractions - pristine beaches, amazing backwaters, spectacular festivals and lovely hill stations. But increased number of tourists are opting for places like Lakshadweep and Andaman over Kerala simply because they want to indulge in adventure water sports activities like scuba diving. Bond Safari Kovalam was started by a team of adventurists and experienced Indian businessmen, partnered with Cool Divers SL from Spain, with an aim to bring state of the art diving experience to India.

The prime activity of Bond Safari Kovalam is scuba diving and since its initiation in 2016, it has been very much appreciated, accepted and enjoyed by both international and domestic tourists alike. “We changed into our dive suits and left for the famed Kovalam beach, preparing ourselves for the encounter with the sea. In just a moment, I was engulfed by the eternity of the sea silencing the noise of the other world.

The many marvels of the sea! All I could perceive were the entrancing rhythm of my breath, the murmur of the sea in my ears and the banging of my thoughts on the walls of my mind wanting to be freed into the vastness of the sea,” says Arya Jose while sharing her diving experience.

The diving sessions start with a briefing by one of the diving instructors where the divers are  taught the four important hand signals, ‘ok’, ‘problem’, ‘up’ and ‘down’. They also practice ‘equalising’ by pinching their nose and blowing through their ears. “Communication underwater is done through sign language. As my dive instructor pointed out the various organisms of the sea, as he mimicked with his hands the wavy patterns on the sea floor, as he dug out shellfish from the sea bed, as he pointed out the patterns created by the sun on the sea floor, I gaped like a child at every new discovery,” she adds.

The word  scuba stands for self contained underwater breathing apparatus. It had been popular abroad, but now, it is becoming popular in Kerala too, thanks to Bond Safari Kovalam, the first PADI certified Dive Resort in Kerala offering many scuba diving certification courses.
