THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Saraswati Gandhi, 84, wife of Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson the late Kanti Lal, passed away at Jubilee Hospital here at around 11.30 am on Sunday morning.

She was undergoing treatment for the last three months for dementia and old age ailments. The body will be cremated at Thycaud crematorium here at 12 noon on Monday. Saraswati is survived by sons Shanti Kumar Gandhi (doctor) and Pradeep Kumar Gandhi (chartered accountant). Her body will be brought to her house at flat number 102, Woodland Apartments, Jagathy, at 9.15 a.m. on Monday.

She made Kerala her home after her husband’s death. Saraswati was the daughter of the late Thycattu Naranathu Tharavattil Padmavathy Thankachi and late N.K. Krishnan Pillai.

Also, she was the niece of the late Gandhian G. Ramachandran.

Her husband Kanthilal, a doctor by profession, had passed away in 1983 after 38 years of married life. Kanthilal was the son of Gandhiji’s eldest son Harilal Mohandas Gandhi.
