THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The SMS market in India is unaffected though there has been an growing inclination towards messenger applications such as WhatsApp, which is setting a trend in India. At the same time, European market has showed a decline in SMS usage, Vinod Vasudevan, group CEO of Flytxt, told mediapersons here on Tuesday.
“Be it WhatsApp or SMS, the number of messages that are being sent has only increased in India,” he said.
According to mobile phone data analysts, a major source of revenue of mobile service providers is still retained by voice calls. As the country is yet to tap the full potential of voice mail, missed calls, roughly estimated to comprise 50 per cent of all voice calls, are looked upon as non-revenue makers.
When telecom analysts can keep track of the usage pattern of mobile phones without intruding into the privacy of information exchange and make recommendations to the operator, one of the places where it could face a deficit is in deciding the age group of users.
“It is observed that mobile phone users in India are maximum in the age group of above 35 years. This may vary as phone connections taken in the name of one person might actually be used by the family members such as spouse and children. There are also people who use multiple SIM cards. They comprise at least 30 per cent of customers,” Vinod said.
Telecom data analysis being an area with much scope for R&D, Flytxt is on an expansion mode. It targets to achieve 200 per cent growth in a year and a three-fold spatial expansion of its establishment in Technopark, from where all necessary software development is done, and in Mumbai. In a year’s time, in Thiruvananthapuram alone, the firm is planning to recruit 150 personnel.
