First in Kerala: Spine stimulation on bedridden woman by SUT hospital

SUT Hospital, Pattom revealed they successfully performed the spinal cord stimulation procedure on a 59-year-old woman, first time in Kerala.

TIRUVANANTHAPURAM :  In a laudable feat, also the first time it is being carried out by medics here, surgeons at the  SUT Hospital, Pattom revealed they successfully performed the spinal cord stimulation procedure on a 59-year-old woman.  Hospital authorities claimed it is the first time the procedure has been carried out in Kerala.

“The bedridden patient was admitted to hospital with Postherpetic neuralgia. She complained of severe pain and burning sensation in the left chest area. According to her she had developed an infection last April and had consulted several hospitals before coming to SUT,” they said. According to the SUT authorities, after successful trial stimulation, the patient underwent surgery for the placing the spinal cord stimulator. They added that the patient could now lead a  life free from pain. 

Spinal Cord Stimulation is a rare procedure carried out in patients with chronic pain syndromes such as Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), Failed Back Syndrome and Chronic Neuropathic pain. It is a safe, effective and less invasive procedure offering permanent relief from pain.
