Did you know what a female elephant is called? When Yuvraj Krishna Sharma, the co-founder of Kompanions asked us this question, we were stumped. This and many others questions were fielded by him and his co-founder Gautam Arjun, to teachers and students during their research. “Imagine when such simple trivia, introduced early in our learning cycles, cannot be answered. Basics in children is what’s missing and this got us thinking.”

Around 18 months of conceptualising followed and led to the birth of Gurugram-based Kompanions this March. “I am an optimist. I believe a lot of good is being done in the education sector but we need to channelise and make things better,” says Yuvraj. Similarly, at Kompanions, the aim is not to clash with the existing education and curriculum, it’s to supplement. This is done through activity kits, gamification and elements like virtual reality and augmented reality.

Though logical ability is something every child should possess children are only introduced to it only through mathematics. Same goes for vocabulary, which needs to be built not memorised. So the vision of Kompanions is to craft a journey for children that lies a step ahead than the text books, because, “No child wants to come back home today and sit with a book,” he says rightly. In fact, no one wants to do that in school either.

Take for example the library hour — which is used only to “complete homework or chit chat with friends. Currently, the purpose of a library is defeated,” says Yuvraj. This is where Kompanions’ novel concept KLAB comes in, already operational in certain schools of Delhi, Chandigarh and Jaipur. Elements like VR, AR and games are added for concepts (example, animal kingdom, monuments), to engage and make learning fun.

These AR, VR and other elements are created by a 40 member team of Kompanions comprising of gamers, coders, musicians, academicians and more. All the child needs to do is pick what they are interested in from the cognitive development banks in the library. “For me, it’s all about learning the skills. Once you possess them, marks will follow. You need to have a definite foundation,” says Yuvraj, who wants to simplify learning and bring the joy back in education. And by the way, female elephants are called cows!
