Making the world a better place for all

The future lies in the hands of the youth — and the youth from Coimbatore who started the Trust, Maattram have proven just that. Working together with the people to build a better society, is their simple yet rather demanding vision.

Set up in 2015 by Thamizhinian M, the Trust is run solely by college students. In the past year, they have organised many successful campaigns including a marathon in 2016 to raise funds for deserving sportspersons whose dreams were cut short due to financial constraints.

With the entry fee collected, Maattram was able to gift coupons to 15 students to buy their required sports gear for a year.

But this isn’t the end of the line for them. Maattram intends to flag off more campaigns in support of women empowerment, to abolish child labour, lend a helping hand to those in need, educate the poor, and volunteer for social programmes.

Talking to the president and founder of Maattram about his inspiration to start the Trust, he said that he wanted to change people’s notions about the present-day youth and the society. He wanted to start something worthwhile that would only grow further. He plans to expand the Trust throughout India and join hands with the youngsters all over the country to make a change for the better.

When asked what makes Maattram stand out from the rest, he said, “We believe in doing things practically. There are others who have a similar approach. We believe that everything is unique. What we do uniquely is that we not only try to help the society but also try to make it grow and bring about change. For example, the marathon was conducted to help exceptional sportspersons who lack the financial backing to reach their true potential.”

According to him, the strength of the Trust is the team work and positivity that they receive from the team and their supporters. He also finds strength in the negativity that they get from people, which they channelise to push themselves to prove that they can face challenges and not back down.

He does confess that the only struggle they face is in finding sponsors for their events but they are working on this as well.

They have conducted five events so far and are planning many more, confident that they will never stop. Though they have faced a lot of rejection, they use it as motivation to keep going. They plan to achieve their long-term goals by creating a clear-minded society which is well-educated, above the poverty line, with empowered women, and by thinking out of the box and helping those in need.
