Aditi Balan, an advocate-turned-actor, didn’t think she’d bag the role of the heroine after her auditions for Aruvi. “It was completely unexpected. A friend had mentioned about the audition and I thought I should give it a try!” she says. On hindsight, she says she couldn’t have asked for a better launch than with this socio-political drama by Arun Prabhu Purushothaman.
Growing up, this debutante used to watch a lot of films. “But never did I even think that I could become an actor, let alone shoulder a film,” she smiles.
She plays a character who smokes and drinks in her debut, but it wasn’t a matter of concern for her. “I didn’t really look at it like that. I was just giving the film my all. The drinking and smoking was necessary for the film,” she says.
Arun’s narration was so effective that she almost felt like she was watching the film. “Even though I’d read the script before the narration, to hear it from him was a new experience and I realised all I had to do was follow his cues,” she says. “I loved the script. The content is great; it’s a great opportunity for a first-timer.”
She says Arun’s a director who has great clarity in thought. “He wants to reach out to the masses through his art and knows how to do it.”
To prepare for the role, Aditi had a few rehearsals, and also met people to understand the issues the film deals with. All of this helped her, especially for portions in the second half, when her character transforms. “The team was also so dedicated and inspired me to give my best for this project. Aruvi was a great learning experience.”
Was she able to relate to her role in the film? “Aruvi is a special character and seeks love from everyone. But she also wants to spread love. I related to her a bit, but I think she is far more intense than I am.”
Aditi hopes that this film will result in more interesting scripts coming her way. “Aruvi will make an impact on the audience for sure. There are certain questions that every man asks himself at times. The film will dwell on such intriguing things,” she says.
