Tamil cinema has long been known for its sentimental content. If not about a mother and son, it’s about the relationship of a brother and sister. While such stories may have faded, Konjam Konjam brings back the sister sentiment. The director, Udayasankaran Whaterman, who has previously made Virunthali, says, “Everyone has konjam konjam aasai in their lives.

Turning that into success is a journey and this film is about that. Success also comes with sacrifices and Konjam Konjam is about the sacrifices a brother makes for his elder sister.”

The director, who has previously worked under the late National Award winning director, AK Lohithadas, says there’s also a good mix of love and humour in this emotional drama.

“Despite being newbies, the leads, Gokul, Neenu, and Priya Mohan, have given really good performances,” he adds. The film, which also stars Appukutty and Mansoor Ali Khan, was mainly shot on the Tamil Nadu- Kerala border. Udaysankaran asserts that music plays an important role in the film.

“The music will convey the emotions of this film, and though only a debutant, the composer, Vallavan, has given six beautiful songs,” says the filmmaker, who has previously directed music videos in Malayalam featuring stars like Amala Paul and Bhavana.

On making films in Tamil, he says, “I like the Tamil culture and storytelling inspires me. Stories are often the hero in Tamil cinema. People give respect to good scripts here.”
