Samatha Divas: Birth anniversary of Babu Jagjivan Ram

Jagjivan Ram (5 April 1908 – 6 July 1986), popularly known as Babuji, was a freedom activist, a staunch supporter of Dalit rights, Cabinet minister and a Member of Parliament for an uninterrupted period of 50 years.

Babu Jagjivan Ram died on 6th July 1986. During his initial years as a political activist he had organized a Mazdoor Rally at Wellington Square in 1928, in which over 50,000 people participated. In 1935 he voiced his support in the Hindu Mahasabha for the rights of Dalits to enter temples and drink water from public wells. His birth anniversary is observed as Samata diwas (Equality Day) in India. (Express Photo)
