NEW DELHI: The BJP chief Amit Shah on Tuesday termed the win in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls as people's "stamp of approval" for the decision of demonetisation by the Narendra Modi-led-government at the Centre.

“The win in Chandigarh along with similar victory in elections in different parts of the country following the decision of demonetization shows popular mood. This should serve as a lesson to the Opposition, which is seeking to indulge in politics in the name of demonetisation,” Shah said in a statement.

The BJP chief stated that the party has won in local polls in four places after the Prime Minister took the decision. He slammed the Congress for “negative politics”. “The Congress has emerged as a symbol of negative politics in the country,” said Shah, while adding that the “the win is unprecedented".

Incidentally, the BJP won 21 of 26 seats in Chandigarh municipal corporation. The BJP ally Akali Dal won one while the Congress could bag just four wards.

"In elections held across different parts of the country following demonetisation, people have taught a lesson to the Opposition. People have told them their mood, besides giving a direction to politics. They have put a stamp of approval on the decision on demonetisation,” Shah stated.

The BJP chief claimed that the Chandigarh victory is another example of people's faith in Modi's vision.
