Over 13,700 foreigners staying in J&K: Government

Over 13,700 foreigners, including Tibetans and Rohingya  Muslims from Myanmar, are staying in Jammu and Kashmir .

SRINAGAR: Over 13,700 foreigners, including Tibetans and Rohingya  Muslims from Myanmar, are staying in Jammu and Kashmir and none of the Rohingya Muslim has been founded involved in militancy related incidents in the State, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti informed on Wednesday.

“As on January 6, 2017, 13,755 foreigners are staying in Jammu and Kashmir. Of these 13433 are Rohingya Muslims /Tibetians and 322 other foreigners,” Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who also holds Home portfolio, said in a written reply to a question by BJP MLA Rajesh Gupta in the Legislative Assembly in Jammu, winter capital of the State, today.

She said of the 13755 foreigners staying in the State, 5743 are Rohingya Muslims and 7690 Tibetans.

“The Rohingya Muslims have been staying in districts of Jammu and Samba in Jammu province while Tibetans are staying in Ladakh region.”

She further said 322 foreigners are staying in different parts of the State including in Valley.

In response to a question, who guided them to enter the state, Mehbooba said they have entered the State on their own.

Referring to organizations and persons supporting their stay in Jammu, she said some NGOs namely “Sakhawat” run by Mohammad-ul-Umar of Srinagar alongwith Dr Rashid S/o Kh Ghulam Mohammad Jammu, SR Institute of Development based at Rambagh Srinagar, Delhi based NGO namely “DAJI” run by Ravi Hemadri and “Save the Children” run by Neha Gandotra are helping the Rohingyas Muslims in cash and kind from time to time.

“However, strict surveillance is being kept on activities of the foreigners and the organization extending helping to them,” she said.

The CM, disclosed that no Rohingya Muslim has been founded involved in militancy related incidents in the State.

She, however, said 17 FIRs have been registered against 38 Rohingya Muslims for various offences including those relating to illegal border crossing.
