SRINAGAR:  Army on Saturday foiled an infiltration bid of militants along Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector of border district of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir by killing two militants. Two soldiers were also killed in the gunfight.

An army official said soldiers deployed along LoC in Nowgam sector detected a movement of militants trying to sneak into this side from across the LoC late this afternoon.

He said the army men fired on the militants, who returned the fire from automatic weapons.

“In the ensuing gunfight, two militants and two soldiers were killed,” the official said.

Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, confirmed killing of two soldiers and two militants in the gunfight.

He said operation is going on.

Additional reinforcement was rushed to the area to ensure that militants don’t manage to infiltrate to this side of LoC, an army official said.

He said intense combing operation is going on.

The infiltration bid by militants took place a day after Defence Minister Arun Jaitley visited the forward areas along LoC in North Kashmir.

Accompanied by GoC of Baramulla-based Division, Maj Gen RP Kalita, the defence minister had yesterday visited forward areas along LoC in Rampur sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district and was briefed by senior commanders about security situation and measures taken to foil infiltration of militants.

Talking to reporters in Srinagar after the visit, Jaitley had said, “Our soldiers are fully confident that they would not allow any form of infiltration to take places in their areas from across the LoC”.

“The aggressive domination and readiness of troops for befitting response to any misadventure by enemy is very satisfying,” he had said.
