GUWAHATI: A man missing from Assam since July last year has reportedly joined the Hizbul Mujahideen and his mother has said he should be shot dead as he is an enemy of the country.

A photo of a gun-toting Qamer Uz Zaman, son of Ibrahim Zaman of Jamunamukh in Hojai district, has gone viral on social media.

The photo caption suggests he is a member of the Hizbul Mujahideen and his organisational code is “Dr. Hurairah”.

“If he has joined the militant organisation, he should be shot dead as he is an enemy of the country. I don’t need such a son. Such a person should not be living,” Zaman’s mother, Tahera Begum, said. She recognised him from the photo.

“Yes, he is my son Qamer. He has become thinner,” she said. The Assam Police said they were trying to find out if Zaman had indeed joined the terrorist organisation.

“We are in touch with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and are conducting an investigation,” Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay told The New Indian Express.

Zaman is an undergraduate but is said to have been a bright student. Like his mother, brother Mufidul too said he should be killed as he is a “traitor”.

The family had gone to Jammu and Kashmir last year after Zaman was reported missing.

“He went to the US in 2008 in search of a job and spent four years there. In 2014, he decided to go to Jammu and Kashmir and do business.

“Five-six people from Jamunamukh were there doing business. His wife and three-year-old son were with him until they were brought back home early last year. He used to visit our Jamunamukh home off and on and bring gifts for the family. He was constructing a house back home and his dream was to complete it,”

Mufidul told reporters. The last time Zaman visited his Jamunamukh home was in the early part of 2017 when he came to drop his wife and son. Local people said he had gone astray after being brainwashed by militants.
