NEW DELHI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday, in a rather caustic remark, expressed apprehension that prominent businessman Anil Ambani could flee India.

"....shayed ab Anil Ambani bhi bhag jae (May be now even Anil Ambani will run away)," Mr Gandhi told reporters outside Lodhi Road police station where he had courted arrest to protest the decision to send CBI director Alok Verma on leave.

"The fact of the matter is Prime Minister Narendra Modi has helped Anil Ambani (in Rafale aircraft deal)," Mr Gandhi said.

Mr Gandhi led a Congress protest against the government's alleged arbitrary actions against CBI director Alok Verma.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said Mr Modi has sought to conceal facts on Rafale deal and his action against CBI chief Mr Verma was guided by the fact that he (PM) has helped business tycoon Anil Ambani garner a profit of Rs 30,000 crore.

Mr Gandhi referred to the instances wherein bank defaulters Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi had fled.

"This is a Prime Minister who will not waive Re 1 for farmers.. ..," he said adding the likes of NIrav Modi and Mehul Choksi have fled and in that context went on to add that probably even Anil Ambani would flee India.

Anil Ambani is the younger son of business doyen Late Dhirubhai Ambani, who was once known for being pretty close to the Congress leadership during the tenure of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister.

Mr Ambani (59) is the chairman of Reliance ADA Group which came into existence in June 2005 after a demerger from Reliance Industries Limited.
