Adventure water sports on Visakhapatnam beaches beckon tourists

VISAKHAPATNAM: The aficionados of adventure water sports in the city have a reason to cheer as several facilities has been introduced at the backwaters of Mangamaripeta and Rushikonda Beach and shortly they will be launched at Mangamaripeta beach too. Tourists and locals at the spot are thrilled by the experiences of kayaking, speed boat rides and jet ski, banana boat rides, Zorbing ball and bandwagon have been launched for the adrenaline junkie.

After the trials for eight days from July 11, finally ‘Ocean Wave’ launched its  water sports at Mangamaripeta backwaters on July 20.

“The water sports is getting a good response from tourists. At present, we have operated the sports at backwaters of Mangamaripeta and Rushikonda Beach. In a few months, the visitors at the Mangamaripeta Beach can also enjoy the adventures. The Mangamaripeta beach is an ideal place for water sports, but not many people visit there and it has the best scenic view also which can be a great destination for water sports in Visakhapatnam,” said Mohammed Shoyab, director of Ocean Wave.

“Most people love the water sports at the backwaters of Mangamaripeta because it is calm and people feel rejuvenated. Though the sea waves of Rushikonada Beach are quite conducive for the water sports, though the stones embankment built to arrest the erosion could be a disturbance for the adventurers,” he added.

“We have invested Rs 5 crore on this project and we will come up with more in the coming days. Hovercraft, fly board and scuba diving will be introduced soon. Besides, we are planning for yachts and cruise boats in future. At present all the water sports boats and other equipments have been shifted to Vijayawada for the Krishna Pushkarams as the Tourism department wants people to experience the water sports,” said Shoyab.

Kayaking costs Rs 200 per head, speed boat Rs 300 for three rounds, jet ski Rs 250 and  banana boat Rs 150.

“We have sanctioned Rs 14 crore for the development purpose. We have eight beach points and we are trying to develop several beach parks, water sports and a few others are planned to make the places best tourist attractions and water sports is one among them. The coastal belt has great scope for water sports. The Fishing harbour, opposite Hawa Mahal and several other beach points can have a few adventure sports too for tourists but these are in the pipeline. The ‘Ocean Wave’ is in trial if it really attracts people, then we would try to continue it and expand it,” said K Gyanaveni, district tourism officer, Visakhapatnam.
