HYDERABAD: Eleven months after cases were registered by Cyberabad police against Union minister Bandaru Dattateya, University of Hyderabad (UoH) vice-chancellor P Appa Rao and others on charges of Dalit attrocity and abetment to suicide, no headway has been made yet.

Dalit research scholar from UoH Rohith Vemula had committed suicide by hanging from ceiling fan in a hostel room on January 17 and the matter had snowballed into a national issue soon after.

When asked about the inordinate delay in the investigation into the case, the Cyberabad police commissioner Sandeep Shandilya on Wednesday said they are awaiting reply from the revenue officials of Andhra Pradesh on the caste status of  Rohith Vemula, to enable them to finalise investigation in the case.

“AP revenue officials are supposed to certify the caste of  Rohith Vemula.  I wrote to the revenue officials a number of times seeking the caste certificate of Rohith. There is no response from them,” Sandeep Shandilya said.

First, the Gurajala revenue officials of Guntur district had certified Rohith as a Dalit. Later, the Guntur Urban revenue officials came with a fresh certificate stating that Rohith Vemula cannot be a Dalit as his father belonged to Vaddera caste of Backward community (BCs), he added. more: p2
