VIJAYAWADA: Prime accused in the suicide of a PG student of Guntur Medical College and senior professor of Gynaecology VAA Lakshmi along with her family had travelled to heavily crowded cities and temple towns in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Puducherry to evade the arrest.

The family had visited over 16 cities, but was caught by the police when they used their debit card for payment of bills at a lodge in Bengaluru.

The police on Tuesday produced professor VAA Lakshmi and five others including her husband G Vijaya Saradhi and son, in the court and they were remanded for two weeks of judicial custody. Lakshmi has been charged with abetting her student and postgraduate medico Dr B Sandhya Rani to commit suicide.

Speaking to the media, inspector general of police (IG) Sanjay said that the police teams have gathered a majority of the evidence against Lakshmi who has been accused of harassing the deceased. "Sandhya Rani's diary is a major evidence and will be considered as a dying declaration from her. Except for some technical information, we have obtained all evidence against the accused," he added.

Besides Lakshmi, the police also arrested her husband Dr Vijaya Saradhi and son along with two others for helping the accused evade the police arrest. The police are also gathering information and making attempts to arrest a few others who helped Lakshmi to escape. The IG said that if the role of any police personnel was found in helping Lakshmi to evade the arrest, departmental action will be initiated against them.

Lakshmi told the media that Sandhya Rani was not interested in pursuing gynaecology but her husband forced her to take up the course which might have depressed her and drove her to commit suicide. "I have done nothing wrong. I love my students and they too like me. In my entire career, no such allegations were made against me earlier," she said.
