Vijayawada cops moot new auto numbering system

VIJAYAWADA: The city traffic police are planning to implement new numbering system for auto-rickshaws, to control the flow of unauthorised autos into the city.

On Saturday, the traffic police convened a meeting to seek the auto unions’ support to their proposal to avert 4,500 unauthorised autos from plying on the city roads.

According to the city traffic police, nearly 8,500 autos are operating in and around the city.

In order to control the flow of unauthorised vehicles, new numbering system will be implemented for all permitted autos and penalty will be imposed on those operating without permission.

The auto union members responded positively to the proposal and hoped that the numbering system will not affect their daily business.

They also readily extended support to restriction of the flow of unauthorised autos, which helps check road accidents.

“Auto unions have responded positively to our appeals. We will now conduct a basic study before issuing permissions to the autos and then implement the new numbering system soon,” a senior police officer in the city traffic department said.

Meanwhile, the police conducted regular counselling session for overspeeding and for driving without licences. Till now, they booked 690 people for violating traffic rules.
