ELURU: Following the government’s decision to introduce English medium in all elementary schools of the State from the current academic year, the school education department has selected 444 schools in West Godavari district for implementation of the same. More than 2,100 elementary schools function in various mandals, which were surveyed by the department officials. The focus of the survey was on availability of faculty, number of students enrolled, infrastructure and other aspects.

Out of the 444 schools, 287 were selected for implementation of English medium in the first phase and 157 in the second. Pedavegi mandal has the most number of selected schools, which is 22, followed by Chintalapudi with 20 schools. Other mandals in the district have five to 10 schools where the step will be implemented from the current academic year.

Following acceptance for English medium from more number of schools, the officials have also sent a list of 160 schools to the department for its implementation in the third phase. The administration first introduced the move in schools located in urban areas of the district. After getting good reception from the public, the move was decided to be introduced in schools in rural areas.

However, parents of students in rural parts doubt its success and prefer sending their wards to private schools. One of the other concern is lack of teachers with proficiency in English.  Also, no training or orientation class for teachers of the selected schools has been done.District Education Officer CV Renuka said admission process has begun schools for English medium. She added that the government had initiated programmes to make more and more people aware about the government’s plan.
