VIJAYAWADA: Four infants were hospitalised due to adverse reactions resulting from the MR vaccination, which was given to them at a primary health centre at KL Rao Nagar in Vijayawada on Saturday.

On Saturday, 22 children were given the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine at the health centre and four of them fell sick later. The kids were admitted to a private hospital and two of them were receiving treatment at the ICU as their condition is said to be serious, while the other two were recovering.

Speaking on the issue, K Nagaraju, father of 11-month-old Sanjeeth, said, “We are very worried about the situation. Soon after receiving the vaccination, Sanjeeth started feeling sick and vomited several times. His body temperature was also high. We immediately took him to the hospital. We suspect that there is something wrong with the vaccine.”

Meanwhile, district medical and health officer T Padmaja Rani inspected the public health centre at KL Rao Nagar and sent the samples of the vaccine to a laboratory. She also ordered an enquiry over the incident.

Speaking to TNIE, the official said: “Usually, MR vaccine causes some reactions. In cases of these children, the reaction was a little heavy. However, we have ordered an enquiry and sent the samples to the laboratories. In fact, the children were reportedly unwell at the time of vaccination which could be the reason for their hospitalisation. Now, their condition is stable and they are recovering.”
