BENGALURU: In a move that could help the state government assuage the apprehensions of the coastal populace against the Yettinahole project, the state Cabinet has approved the ‘Paschima Vahini’ river project to make better use of water available in the west flowing rivers. The project envisages to build a series of small check dams in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts that would ensure adequate availability of water during summer in three coastal districts. Cabinet on Monday approved Rs200 crore for the project. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,394 crore. The project would benefit millions of people in 19 assembly constituencies in the three districts.
Despite heavy rainfall in the coastal region, people face water problems during summer. The project would help in the conservation of copious water that is available during the monsoon season, said Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister TB Jayachandra.
Urban Waste Water Policy
State government is set to replicate Bengaluru’s recycling of used water in tier-2 cities in Karnataka. The Cabinet on Monday cleared the ‘Urban Waste Water Policy’ for recycling sewerage water in district headquarters and towns.
The state government is already implementing a mega project to fill the irrigation tanks in Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru Rural districts by taking treated sewage water of Benglauru city through pipelines. Action plans would be prepared in each district for recycling sewerage water to meet water shortage in tier two ties, Jayachandra said.
Upgradation of 418km roads
The cabinet cleared a proposal to upgrade 418.6 km road network in the state under the third phase of the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project (KSHIP-III) at a cost of `5,334 crore. In the first stage of the project, the PWD would develop roads between Kollegal and Hanur (23.8 km), Chintamani and Andhra Pradesh border (39.8 km) and Bengaluru (NICE Road) and Magadi (51 km) at an estimated cost of `671 crore, Jayachandra said.
