Scattered rains forecast this weekend in Karnataka

BENGALURU: Before you step out for a weekend outing, check this out. The Indian Meteorological Department and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) have predicted scattered rains in the state for the next few days.

IMD Regional Director Sundar Metri said isolated or scattered rains are likely in the state during the weekend.

KSNDMC Director Srinivas Reddy said, “Rain will not be as heavy as Thursday. But there will be rainfall on Saturday and Sunday’’.

On Thursday, several parts of Bengaluru received heavy rains.

The current weather conditions favour early onset of monsoon, Reddy said. “The good rainfall being recorded now is an indication of early (onset) monsoon. We are expecting monsoon to hit Karnataka by May 29,” he said.

South interior Karnataka including Mysuru, Kodagu, Mandya, Bengaluru and Tumakuru received good rains in the last few days, taking the total rainfall during the calendar year till May 19 to 136.4 mm, which was 24 per cent more than the normal for the period.

However, rainfall during the summer has been 17 per cent less than the average in north interior Karntataka.

Coastal Karnataka received  83.6 mm rainfall during the period which was 7 per cent less than the normal. Pre-monsoon showers had been weak last year affecting sowing activities.
