Kota Srinivasa Pujari of BJP was on Monday elected as Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Council.

BENGALURU: Kota Srinivasa Pujari of BJP was on Monday elected as Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Council. The BJP has 20 members in the council, while the Congress and the JD(S) have 34 and 14 members, respectively. Opposition leader’s post had fallen vacant after BJP leader K S Eshwarappa was elected to Legislative Assembly from Shivamogga constituency in the recent assembly election.

Sources said the BJP decided to appoint former minister Pujari as the Opposition leader as he has a deep understanding of issues in agriculture, rural development, revenue and law and will be able to put the government on the defensive with his articulation.

Meanwhile, pro-tem chairman of the Council Basavaraj Horatti said there was no communication about the election for the post of Chairman of the Council.
