ALAPPUZHA: The body of scriptwriter P K Sarangapani, who died here on Wednesday, was cremated on the premises of his son's house at Pathirapaly on Thursday morning.

Hundreds of people from different walks of life thronged Biju Nivas to get a glimpse of the departed master scriptwriter.

Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal, District Collector P Venugopal, actor Kunchacko Boban, directors Sibi Malayil and B Unnikrishnan were among those who paid homage to Sarangapani.

Sarangapani had created quite a wave in the Malayalam cinema with his maiden script Umma. He wrote scripts based on Kerala's Vadakkan Pattu genre.

Some of Sarangapani's popular films include Thacholi Othenan, Unniyarcha, Palattu Koman, Aromalunni and Kannappanunni. The master storyteller has also written stories and dialogues for 16 plays.

His last film was Kadathanadan Ambadi with Prem Nazir and Mohanlal in the lead. Sarangapani was working on a femalecentric script, but he could not complete it owing to agerelated ailments. His attempt to condense the sevendecadeold saga of Malayalam filmmaking into words titled Malayala Chalachithra Puranam has met with an abrupt end with his demise.
