Two seriously hurt in CPM-League clash in Tanur

MALAPPURAM: Even as the police and people’s representatives are attempting to broker peace between the CPM and Muslim League, the members of both the parties locked horns with each other, leaving two of their cadre seriously hurt in Tanur, here on Saturday.

Koyammadath Kabeer, 27, of the IUML, and CPM worker Koppin Purakkal Hudaif, 19, suffered life-threatening injuries in the confrontation. They were taken to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode.

The clash was a follow-up to an ongoing political turmoil between the two parties in Tanur. Police said the attacks were allegedly motivated by attempts made by the IUML men. Later, a fight broke out between the members of the two parties at Al Bazaar in Tanur town. Kabeer had his ribcage seriously damaged in the incident while Hudaif took a similar attack on his neck and ribs. Sources said that the two party activists had a clumsy verbal spar on the previous day, leading to a near physical clash between them. The police deployed more personnel after the incident.

The Tanur area had witnessed various inter-political clashes over the past few weeks, and despite the best efforts made by the District Collector, the Police and Minister K T Jaleel to restore normalcy, the area remained tense. The conciliatory talks between the leaders did not yield any result after IUML leaders staged a walkout from the event. Many were injured and properties destroyed in the previous clashes.
