Kochi metro gets RDSO ‘speed certificate’

KOCHI: Decks have been cleared for Kochi Metro Rail project to commence operations, with the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) on Thursday issuing the ‘speed certificate’ for operation of standard gauge coaches manufactured by Alstom Transport India Limited.

The RDSO certificate is one of the most important statutory approvals for public operation of Kochi Metro project. RDSO issued the certificate for operation of rail cars with air suspension arrangement at secondary stage up to a maximum speed of 80 kmph over Kochi Metro’s standard gauge rail network.“It is a matter of great pride that RDSO clearance has been obtained for Kochi Metro Rail project without any hitch.

Credit goes to the team of engineers of both Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, who worked together as a single unit,” said KMRL Managing Director Elias George.

Now, obtaining the approval of Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for further inspection and clearance of rolling stock is the next significant step. KMRL will now submit an application to CMRS in this regard. Approval of Union Government will be accorded on the basis of CRMS’ inspection and report.

Two CMRS approvals needed
Two approvals are required from CMRS - clearance of rolling stock and verification clearance of the entire system. The rolling stock also needs the Centre’s approval for opening the metro rail for public under relevant rules. Inspection of the entire system is to be conducted just before the start of revenue operations, after station work and other related works, which also check if all safety and security norms are being followed and maintained, are completed.
