KOLLAM: In a shocking incident, a teacher allegedly broke the hand of a 10-year-old student at Valathungal Government HSS for indiscipline. The student Syed Ali, son of Siraj, is a fifth standard student of the school.
The incident which occurred last Thursday came to light on Monday after the student’s parents approached the media. The General Education Department (GED) officials said D Sheeja, the teacher, was suspended on Friday after the school PTA filed a complaint with Kollam DDE K S Sreekala.
“Sheeja, a physical education teacher, said the boy was running around the class and to put him back in his seat she caught him by his hand. She said that’s how the fracture occured. But the boy said the teacher deliberately twisted his hand after he bent down to take his pen from the floor. The boy said the teacher punished him for being impolite” said a GED official. Sreekala said some vested interests were hyping up the issue even after the teacher was suspended.
“The boy is allegedly restless in nature. But the teacher’s act is not justifiable and deserves disciplinary action. She was suspended with immediate effect. The incident has become a hot topic in the media Some vested interests may be behind this. Earlier, the boys’ parents had threatened the teacher and me to pay compensation. They said if we didn’t settle the issue they would approach the media,” said Sreekala.
The Eravipuram police said the parents were yet to file a complaint despite contacting them several times.
