THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has registered a suo-moto case in connection with the police action taken against Jishnu Prannoy's mother Mahija on Wednesday.

KSHRC acting chairperson P Mohanadas asked the sub-inspector of Museum police station to appear in person at the panel's next sitting on April 24 and submit an explanation.

The Commission's action came in the wake of a complaint from activist P K Raju. The rights panel said the State police chief's attitude of not speaking to Mahija before the protest was a violation of human rights. The order also urged
the police to take strict action of those who committed the excesses.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and extended his faith to the police saying they had not committed any excesses while removing Mahija from the protest venue. He said trouble had started when forces not part of Jishnu Prannoy’s family had joined the protests.
