THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Giving some strong guidelines to police officers, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said they should take actions based on the government policies and should abstain from criticising government/police through social media.

Pinarayi promised government support to “justifiable” police actions, but he also cautioned officers the state regime would not tolerate corruption within the force and to keep away from favouritism.

“State requires police officers who are not corrupt and those who do not resort to third-degree methods.

Stringent measures will be taken against the officers if they violate rules,” he said while addressing the police officers of the Thiruvananthapuram range at Technopark.

Pinarayi said department-level actions would be initiated against senior officers if custodial tortures were reported anywhere in the state.

“Earlier, action was taken against the particular officer who adopted third-degree measures. From now own, higher officials, including DySP and CI, will also be held responsible”, Pinarayi said.

The chief minister asked the police officers to deal with cases carefully so that innocent people would not bear the brunt. He also told the police to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards goonda activities. Pinarayi said UAPA should be slapped only on the basis of DGP’s circular.

Raman Srivastava, advisor to the chief minister on police, Subrata Biswas, Chief Secretary (Home/Vigilance), state police chief Loknath Behera, ADGP (South Zone) B Sandhya, DGP (Intelligence) B S Mohammed Yasin and Thiruvananthapuram range IG Manoj Abraham also addressed the officers. The meeting of Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kannur ranges will be held soon.
