THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lashing out at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the government for the total ineptitude and failure in maintaining law and order, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said the police have been turned into a spent force. Justice is being meted out to none except CPM leaders and cadre in police stations, he said.

Three persons were killed in his Harippad Assembly constituency in the past one-and-a-half weeks as a result of goonda clashes, Ramesh told reporters here on Tuesday. ‘’Four political murders occurred in the Chief Minister’s constituency limits after the Left Government came to power. The law and order front in the state is worsening day by day but the Chief Minister is unconcerned,’’ he said.

Though the CM had directed the police not to entertain issues alerted by public workers CPM men are having a free run, Ramesh said. The police are behaving cruelly with other political workers. ‘’It’s one kind of justice for the CPM and another for the rest,’’ he said.

Ramesh said it is heartening to note the government has accepted the Opposition front’s criticism that peace can be restored in the state only if the CPM and BJP applied their minds. ‘’It’s good that dialogues are being held between CPM and BJP leaders in the wake of unending political killings,’’ he said.  Ramesh will undertake a 12-hour-fast at Harippad on Saturday to arouse public opinion against goonda raj and instil confidence among the public.

Ramesh lambasted the Left Government for remaining in a deep slumber when a severe drought has cast its spell on the state. ‘’The state was declared drought-hit during the last Assembly session. But no follow-up steps were taken. Not even a memorandum has been finalised for submitting to the Centre. Proposals given by MLAs to address the drought situation are being turned down by District Collectors and Kerala Water Authority officials,’’ he said.
