KOZHIKODE: The Railways’ move to bring about development by incorporating private parties has yielded results in the Palakkad division, as assistance by voluntary organisations and corporates through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds has improved facilities at railway stations.

Launched in 2014, various development initiatives were implemented in railway stations under the division. Parking area was developed at Payyannur, while ambulance facility was introduced in Kannur. Besides, automated external defibrillator (AED) was installed at Kannur and Kozhikode, while breastfeeding cubicle facilities were set up at Shoranur and Palakkad.

Contribution was accepted to install seats and waste collection bins on platforms and in waiting rooms. Bulbs were received as donations to improve the lighting system at platforms and parking areas. Luggage trolleys, sanitary dispensers, touch screen information system, electronic train display boards, coach indication boards and clocks were also contributed.

“We are seeking larger participation of corporates. Some are cooperating with us while communication is on with others to make them contribute,” said Palakkad division public relations officer M K Gopinath. “Railways have developed a clear-cut policy on accepting CSR funds and seeking public participation,” said Gopinath. It is also decided to create a CSR cell to draw maximum corporates to the new venture. As per law, companies have to spend 2 percent of their profits on CSR initiatives.
