Berhampur ahead of other cities in hybrid toilets installation

The toilets are being constructed by Sulabh International Social Service Organisation (SISSO), which will also be responsible for maintenance of the units.

BERHAMPUR:  The residents of Silk City are set to get the facility of Hybrid toilets ahead of the eight other cities in the State which have been selected by the State Government for the first phase of construction work. The facility will be come up by June at 14 places in the city with 116-seat facility, said sources.

The toilets are being constructed by Sulabh International Social Service Organisation (SISSO), which will also be responsible for maintenance of the units. The HT projects were sanctioned for Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Baripada, Balasore, Bhadrak and Puri at the same time but Berhampur is all set to achieve the target and start the facility by June.

With most of the two dozen Sulabh toilets constructed by Berhampur Municipal Corporation remaining defunct, the hybrid toilets are likely to bring some relief for the floating population of the city.

The State Government last year entrusted SISSO with construction and maintenance of hybrid toilet complexes in nine cities, including Berhampur under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Yojana.

Accordingly, BeMC identified 14 places, of which construction is underway at nine places, said  Anjan Kumar Mahuri, Urban Planner/Team Leader (AMRUT). Works on  HTs at Ramlingam Tank, Corporation Road, Mango Market and City Hospital are in the final stage and rest are scheduled to be over by the end of June, he said.

Sulabh International has taken up the project in the design-build-operate-maintain-transfer mode, which means the executing agency will bear the cost of the project and recover it by charging the public for using the services.
