SALEM: Dust from the judicial storm surrounding Hadiya’s conversion is yet to settle down but she is getting ready to pick up from where she left. It was a sentimental first day back at a private homeopathy college in the district for the Kerala girl on Wednesday. Hounded by the media, she had only one dream to talk about: freedom. The lingering grief of her not being able to contact her husband was given a momentary break when the dean of the college allowed Hadiya to call her spouse over his phone.
After resuming her course based on the Supreme Court’s instructions, the visibly-emotional 24-year-old spoke to the media and said, “I need the freedom to meet the persons I love. I want to meet my husband. I am just asking for the fundamental rights guaranteed by our Constitution. I demanded nothing but freedom in the apex court. However, I am not yet free.
I have no phone, the college administration does not have clarity about the Supreme Court order. So, we have to wait for the next two or three days. For the past six months I was with people whom I hate. They only tried to convert me. My parents said I was mentally unstable. I am mentally stable. I just want to meet my husband. I do not know whether this would turn out to be another prison.”
Meanwhile, college dean Kannan told media persons that Hadiya had conveyed her regret to the college administration for placing them in a difficult situation. “She has not submitted any documents related to change of name. We are not yet decided on whose place to send her to during holidays. We plan to move court to clear the difficulties surrounding the situation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hadiya’s stay at the hostel would mean she has to follow the extant college rules. “We will not allow her regularly to meet with anyone and allow her to go out once a week for shopping,” Kannan said, adding that during her excursion, she would be chaperoned by the hostel warden. “We will send her application to rejoin the course to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University,” he added.
Meanwhile, fielding media queries regarding Hadiya’s security, Deputy Commissioner of Police G Subulakshmi said that the Kerala girl would be provided adequate security cover round-the-clock and other matters related to her stay would be charted out after discussions with higher official s.
