CHENNAI: Dreaded gangster Sridhar Dhanapalan, dubbed the Dawood Ibrahim of the south, allegedly committed suicide in Cambodia on Wednesday.

Police in Tamil Nadu, who have been pursuing him for a large number of criminal cases, have not confirmed the information yet.

Don Sridhar (44) is said to have consumed cyanide on Wednesday evening, apparently over issues within the family. Sources said he was rushed to a hospital in Cambodia at around 6.30 pm where he died.

"He had been staying in Cambodia alone for the past many months, while his daughters and wife were in Kancheepuram and his son was studying in London," the source added.

As the news of the death spread, tension prevailed near Elliappan Street where his home is located, in his native Kancheepuram.

Sridhar was facing 43 cases, including seven murders. He had left the country in 2013 when the cases against him began mounting, and various means used by the police to trace him were unsuccessful.

Sridhar allegedly owns huge tracts of land in the temple town that he allegedly acquired through illegal means and his assets reportedly total Rs 100 crore.

The state police refer to him as the “Dawood Ibrahim of the South”.

Sridhar is survived by his wife Kumari, daughters Dhanalakshmi and Charumathy, and son Santhosh.

The state police had detained his Dhanalakshmi, Santhosh and Kumari several times since 2013 to find out about his whereabouts.
