Headmaster builds toilets for pupils in Vellore

The 50-year-old headmaster of a government school changed the face of his school by doling out money from his own pocket to construct toilets and water tanks.

VELLORE: Amid the stereotypes that picture government schools as dilapidated and rickety, the 50-year-old headmaster of a government school changed the face of his school by doling out money from his own pocket to construct toilets and water tanks.

To improve the infrastructure at the Panchayat Union Elementary School, Pernampet, the institute received Rs 1,96,000 under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. However, headmaster Pon Valluvan said, “There was not enough money to build toilets and water tank as per prescribed norms, so I put in Rs 65,000.

I raised the height of the wall to six feet - double the government norm. Urinals were also installed,” said Valluvan, adding that  even his house didn’t have such facilities.

Other contributions

Besides contributing towards the toilets, Valluvan built a water tank
The headmaster ensured that every classroom has illustrations and murals of distinguished persons and freedom fighters. He hopes that govt schools will be better than private ones someday
