After Madurai, fire breaks out inside sanctum of Meenakshi temple near Tamil Nadu's Kumbakonam

According to sources, around 12.30 pm, smoke billowed out from the sanctum of Sundareswarar shrine and the smell of burning clothes alerted those residing nearby.

THANJAVUR: Fire broke out inside the sanctum of Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple at Karuppur in Kumbakonam on Thursday afternoon.

According to sources, around 12.30 pm, smoke billowed out from the sanctum of Sundareswarar shrine and the smell of burning clothes alerted those residing nearby.

Following this they informed the priest and also the fire station. The Kumbakonam fire service and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and doused the fire.

After the fire was put out it was found out the pooja articles kept at Sanctum were reduced to ashes. Based on a complaint by Manjamuni, the accountant of the temple the Kumbakonm Taluk police registered a case.

The preliminary inquiries revealed the fire mishap might be occurred due to the fall of oil wick lamp at the sanctum.
