COIMBATORE: A wild elephant named ‘Chinna Thambi’ went on a rampage, damaging crops and houses in Chinna Thadagam on Sunday.

At 7 pm on Saturday, the jumbo entered into Varapalayam from Ponnuthu Amman Temple forest and damaged farms in Thaliyur, Kalaiyanur and Kanuvai.

But Chinna Thambi returned, around 12 am on Sunday, and entered into a grove and damaged a portion of a house and a few bags of cattle feed stored there.

It moved into the Ponnuthu Amman temple forest only around 6.40 am on Sunday, after giving tense moments to the RRT personnel.

A forester said elephant Chinna Thambi alone has destroyed over 250 banana plantations and 30 coconut trees apart from maize fields and other crops in the last few days. Farmers complained that not a single day passes without the threat of the wild elephant movement in their locality and fields
