THOOTHUKUDI: A Judicial magistrate has ordered Pudhukottai police to register a case against BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan and her party cadre for allegedly verbally abusing A Lois Sofia, a 28-year-old research scholar from here, who was arrested on September after raising anti-BJP slogans on a flight in which Tamilisai was travelling.

On September 3, 2018, Sofia, a research scholar at the University of Montreal, arrived at Thoothukudi from Chennai in a flight along with her parents. When the BJP leader walked past Sofia to alight from the flight, the latter shouted “Fascist BJP down”, which eventually resulted in an argument between the two at airport arena. During the altercation, the BJP cadre had allegedly verbally abused Sofia and her parents besides issuing death threat after Sofia refused to apologise to Soundararajan.

Later, Sofia was arrested by Pudhukottai police under Sections 290, 505(1)(b) of IPC and Section 75 (1)(C) of Tamil Nadu City Police Act.  A day after the arrest, Sofia was granted unconditional bail. Currently, Sofia is pursuing her studies at Canada.

Subsequently, AA Samy, father of Sofia, lodged a complaint with Pudhukottai police against Tamilisai and BJP cadre for allegedly verbally abusing his daughter. As police refused to file a case, Samy approached the court seeking to register a case against Tamilisai and BJP cadre under Sections 341, 294(b) and 506(1) of IPC and Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act.

On hearing the case on Thursday, Thoothukudi Judicial Magistrate (III) Thamilselvi ordered Pudhukottai police to file FIR against Tamilisai Soundararajan and her party cadre for allegedly harassing Sofia.
