Puducherry MLA, father get 1-year imprisonment in disproportionate assets case

PUDUCHERRY: All India NR Congress (AINRC) MLA Ashok Anand and his father C Anandane, former chief Engineer of PWD, were convicted and sentenced on Tuesday to one-year rigorous  imprisonment in a disproportionate assets (DPA) case. Puducherry Principal Sessions Judge P Dhanabal, who is the Special Judge under Prevention of Corruption Act in the union territory, also imposed a fine of `1 lakh on each and ordered the CBI to seize property of value equal to the disproportionate assets, from their possession.

The Anti Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai registered the case in 2006 against Anandane, his son Ashok Anand and his wife Vijayalakshmi for accumulating assets to the tune of `3,75,30,221.11 during the period January 1,1997 to January 7, 2006, which is disproportionate to the known sources of income. During this period, Anandane served as General Manager, PASIC (an undertaking of Puducherry Government) and held the posts of Executive Engineer, Superintending Engineer and Chief Engineer of  Public Works Department.

The central agency also charged that he had been in possession of pecuniary resources or property in his name and in the name of his family members Ashok Anand and Vijayalakshmi. He has thereby committed an offence under the sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Vijayalakshmi died in 2009. Therefore, the charge against her abated and charges were framed against Anandane and his son Ashok Anand and they faced the trial.
