Tit-for-tat: Telangana to now cut power supply to Andhra Pradesh if failing to clear Rs 1,676.46-crore dues

This comes a day after Andhra Pradesh stopped power supply to Telangana for want of payment of Rs 4,440 crore dues by the latter.

HYDERABAD: Taking the ongoing rivalry between the two Telugu states to a new level, Telangana has also decided to stop power supply to Andhra Pradesh if the latter does not clear the dues which are to the tune of  Rs 1,676.46 crore.

This comes a day after AP stopped power supply to Telangana for want of payment of Rs 4,440 crore dues by the latter. In a tit-for tat, Transmission Corporation of Telangana Limited chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao wrote a letter to his AP counterpart on Thursday.

“Telangana power utilities are also constrained to regulate power supply to AP Discoms from TS Genco stations due to the failure on the part of AP power utilities to pay the rightful dues to TS power utilities,” he said.

“Adverting to power regulation notice issued by AP and regarding power regulation to TS Discoms immediately, this is to inform you that on several occasions TS power utilities had requested AP power utilities to settle the issues affably by adjusting the AP Genco power bill against the dues payable by them to TS power utilities and release the net amount. But, the requests were unheeded by AP power officials and AP chose to isolate the claims of TS Dicoms and insist on payments only to AP Genco.”

Though three years elapsed since bifurcation, AP Genco was insisting only on settlement of their dues. TS Discoms want the settlement of dues between the two power utilities done on a “permanent and amicable” basis.

“We once again request you to consider the dues to TS power utilities and release Rs 1,676.46 crore to them,” Rao told his AP counterpart.

“TS power utilities are facing severe financial constraint as AP power utilities are not settling the issues, and are forced to discharge certain obligations of the common state like the loans and liabilities of Anantapur and Kurnool, which was affecting their finances. “TS Genco is meeting the obligations of AP Genco more than its share of loans,” Rao said.
