Telangana allowed to draw 1.5 tmcft Krishna water till month-end

HYDERABAD: Telangana will get 1.5 tmcft of water for meeting its drinking water needs from river Krishna while Andhra Pradesh will get 6.5 tmcft water as its share. The two states will draw the water till May end.

The working group of Krishna River Management Board was scheduled to be held on Friday. However, initially, it was called off as the engineer-in-chief of Telangana was not available.

Sources said AP wanted the meeting to be held as it was having a problem in meeting drinking water needs of some of its towns and cities. With this, the officials of the two states had a telephonic conversation in which the amount of water to be drawn till May end was decided.

Telangana wanted around 10 tmcft of water till June end to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and some areas enroute.

However, it got 1.5 tmcft only and it was decided that the working group meeting can be held in June first week to take a decision on further water drawing from river Krishna based on the rainfall received by the basin.

Similarly, AP will get 6.5 tmcft water to meet drinking water needs of villages and towns in Guntur and Prakasam districts, sources said.
