New traffic management system to curb accidents on ORR

HYDERABAD: With a primary objective of attaining zero mortality on the Outer Ring Road, Highway Traffic Management System would be implemented by end of 2017, keeping in view the recommendations made by the Central Road Research Institute’s (CRRI) report, said Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority commissioner T Chiranjeevulu.

After flagging off the four new patrolling vehicles of the Cyberabad traffic police on ORR on Thursday, the HMDA commissioner handed over 30 breathe analysers and five speed laser guns, to increase enforcement on the expressway.

Speaking at the event, commissioner (HMDA) Chiranjeevulu mentioned that prime causes for the road accidents are overspeeding and drunk driving. The CRRI has furnished a comprehensive safety audit report on ORR in May 2017. The highest speed travelled by a vehicle on the ORR between Shameerpet and Keesara near Leonia resort was 208 kmph, as per the report, he said.

Switching between the lanes without proper indications, improper pedestrian crossing on the road, halting vehicles on and also slow movements are the reasons that police have identified as the reasons for the 206 road accidents that took place on ORR, in last three years, says Sandeep Shandiliya, commissioner, Cyberabad police. Apart from HTMS, a speed violation detection system existing on the Delhi-Noida highway is proposed to be implemented on ORR.

Range of safety measures
As part of the system, ORR would also get communication boxes, automatic vehicle counter, variable message boards with 19 interchanges and a traffic control centre at Nanakramguda and a sub-traffic control centre at Ghatkesar. ORR will also get four meteorological data systems, 41 CCTV cameras and a fleet of ambulances.
