

VISAKHAPATNAM: A picture is worth a thousand words, goes the saying. Yes, what else can be the best way to narrate the history of the Port City and its significance by capturing the essence through lens?
As many as 92 photographs, both old and new ones, were displayed at the photo exhibition that was organised by the royal family of Hawa Mahal in the city. To observe the World Heritage Day on Tuesday, the exhibition was inaugurated in Hawa Mahal on Monday by GVMC additional commissioner GVVS Murthy.
The glory of Visakhapatnam was showcased through pictures where each frame clicked by 20 professional and amateur shutter buggers had a story to tell.
From the heritage buildings of St Aloysius School, Town Hall, Andhra University, Collectorate to the heritage sites of Bavikonda, Bojjannakonda and Yerramatti Dibbalu (red sand hillocks), the essence was captured in a way that narrated the past.
The heritage lovers and the visitors were taken to a historical journey through the photos clicked by K Bhaskar Rao like ‘The Jewel of East Coast (Vizag) in 1940, 1980 and 1990’ and the heritage of submarine INS Kursura in action, hauling action and final stage. The printed copy of a photo ‘Vizagapatam in 1795’ clicked by Captain JT Blunt gave a glimpse of the Dolphin’s Nose in those years.
Frames of heritage sites and structures clicked by students of Sri Prakash Vidyanikethan and Andhra University during the heritage walk that was organised recently were also on display.
Charcoal art of vibrant and imposing Hawa Mahal during the night ‘Hawa Mahal @ 100- hamesha ek naya mahal’ was presented by A Naresh Babu, an amateur artist.
Mayank Kumari Deo of the royal family of Jeypore who lives in Visakhapatnam, said: “On the eve of the 100th anniversary of Hawa Mahal, I have organised this exhibition for the people of the city. People need to be enlightened on the rich heritage of Vizag.”
Curator of the Visakha Museum MNA Patrudu, INTACH members Edward Paul and Jayashree Hatangadi and others were present during the occasion. The exhibition is open on Tuesday at Hawa Mahal from 11 am to 8 pm.
