BENGALURU: Bumping into walls will be a thing of the past for this cute 1-year-old Labrador named Pluto after undergoing an eye transplant surgery by Dr Madan V Kompal. This is the first eye transplant done in  Mysuru.

Pluto had lost his vision in an accident. His only hope was a transplant, but with the available resources and technology in Mysuru it wasn’t easy for both Pluto and his owner.

Pluto’s owners and Dr Madan were on a hunt for an eye donor and after a lot of research, the doctors identified Pinkie, a 16-year-old mongrel that was suffering from chronic kidney failure, as a prospective donor.  Given his age and the severity of disease, Pinkie had only a few days left but had a healthy vision and there was an opportunity for his eyes to live on.

Dr Madan told Express that Pluto’s family was put in touch with Pinkie’s family and both the families agreed to giving Pluto a second chance to see.

“With all the necessary precautions and consent taken, a successful eye transplantation surgery was performed,” said Dr Madan.

Pinkie passed away a few days later at 9.30 pm and Pluto’s owner informed Dr Madan about it.
Dr Madan rushed to Pinkie’s house, extracted the eyes and and stored it in a sterile condition and informed Pluto’s owner.

On September 30, Pinkie’s eye was carefully put into Pluto’s socket by performing a  surgery that lasted for three hours and a cone was put around his neck to prevent Pluto from scratching his eye.
Now Pluto is getting back to normal life and looks like he is using his new eye, shaking his protective scarf away to see the world.

Dr Madan says, “Pluto is on a post operative care and the prognosis of surgery is currently fairly good but the results would be clearly known only after six months. He is responding to light and blinks his eye which is a good sign of recovery and success of the surgery.”
